Good Friday not a holiday in Gujarat

April 07, 2004 22:25 IST

Taking exception to the Gujarat government's decision to withdraw Good Friday from its list of holidays, the Christian community on Wednesday threatened to boycott the forthcoming Lok Sabha election.

A rally was organised on Tuesday by the All India Christian Council to lodge the community's protest against the government decision.

"Despite mass protests against the move that has hurt sentiments of Christians, the BJP government has not taken any action. We shall not stay back from boycotting the Lok Sabha election," AICC national executive member Samson Christia said in a statement.

He claimed the Gujarat high court has said the deletion of Good Friday from the list of government holidays was violative of the Constitution.

The AICC is now preparing to move the Supreme Court.
