Rahul Gandhi is sick, again

Sharat Pradhan in Lucknow | April 22, 2004 09:43 IST

Rahul Gandhi is sick again and has cancelled his proposed campaign in parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi's son, who is contesting the Amethi parliamentary constituency, was out of action for more than a week earlier this month due to a viral fever, which is now back.

The news will disappoint Congress workers, who wanted to deploy him outside Amethi and Rae Bareli, from where Sonia is contesting.

"He was unable to bear the strain and has been advised rest by doctors once again," a party leader said. "So his proposed campaign in about a dozen key parliamentary constituencies of eastern UP has been deferred.

"He will, meanwhile, meet local party functionaries and give final touches to workers' deployment for the polling day -- April 26," he added.

Rahul had returned to action just 24 hours ago.

He landed at the Lucknow airport with his mother. They, however, moved in different directions from there. While Sonia headed for Rae Bareli, Rahul drove down to Amethi.
