Trinamool distances itself from BJP agitation

May 18, 2004 20:19 IST

Dissociating itself from the BJP's stand on Sonia Gandhi's foreign origin, National Democratic Alliance ally Nationalist Trinamool Congress on Tuesday supported the Congress chief's candidature for prime ministership.

"It is a matter for BJP. Our party has nothing against a person of foreign origin becoming a prime minister," a senior Trinamool Congress leader and party legislator Saugata Roy told PTI.

Referring to Gandhi's reluctance in accepting the post of prime minister, he said, "The reasons behind such a decision is not clear. This is not very healthy sign for democracy."

"She was elected leader of the largest party. So she should naturally have become the prime minister. So, the fact that she refuses to become prime minister speaks ill of the ruling coalition. I do not know at the initial moment how long it will last," he said.
