Congress MPs want Gandhi to nominate new leader

May 19, 2004 09:26 IST

Congress MPs will on Wednesday meet in Delhi statewise to pass resolutions authorising party chief Sonia Gandhi to nominate the leader of the Congress Parliamentary Party.

The meetings would be held to speed up the process of electing the CPP leader in the wake of Gandhi's refusal to accept the prime minister's post, party sources said.

The meetings would be conducted by the AICC members in charge of the various states. The meetings would authorise Gandhi to nominate a new CPP leader thereby eliminating the need to call the CPP meet again.

Gandhi at Tuesday's CPP meeting had declined to take over as the prime minister urging Congressmen to 'trust and allow' her take a decision.
