Heavy rains lash north India

Large parts of north India were lashed by a severe thunderstorm followed by heavy rains on Sunday night.
A 60-year-old labourer, identified as Lal Chand, was killed when he was struck by lightening in Marrianwala locality in Batala town.
A baby girl of a migrant labourer was burnt alive when high velocity winds sparked off a fire in a slum cluster in Sultanpur Lodhi in Kapurthala district, reports reaching here said.
Chandigarh was lashed by heavy rain late Sunday night and normal life came to a standstill. A dust storm followed by rains caused a power breakdown for over two hours and trees and electricity poles were uprooted at many places.
Vehicular traffic in the city and along the national highway at Zirakpur, Ambala and Kurukshetra moved at a snail's pace.
Chandigarh received 38.2 mm of rain followed by Ambala 35.8 mm and Karnal 32.4 mm.
