The BJP-sponsored dawn-to-dusk Jharkhand bandh against the appointment of the United Progressive Alliance government in the state was total. However, no untoward incident was reported till noon.

In the capital, most shops, commercial establishments and educational institutions remained closed and public transport was off the roads.

Most banks were open but witnessed less than normal transactions.

In Jamshedpur around six bandh supporters were rounded up when they tried to blockade the Tata-Howrah Steel Express at the Tatanagar
railway station.
Reports of train blockades were also received from Bokaro and Jamtara.

The Central Board of Secondary Education and the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education examinations in Jamshedpur were not interrupted. However, students had a tough time reaching examination centers, as bandh supporters blocked the road at Kharkhai bridge, which links the steel city with adjoining Saraikela-Kharswan district, sources said. The blockade was later cleared by the police.

Hundreds of NDA supporters, led by former East Singhbhum district president Abhay Singh, took out a procession enforcing bandh in Sakchi, the business hub of Jamshedpur.

Talking to newspersons, Singh alleged that at least 15 BJP activists were injured when police resorted to lathi-charge when the party was taking out a 'peaceful' procession in Sakchi.

Around 400 people in East Singhbhum and Saraikela-Kharswan districts were rounded, police sources said.

The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance, which began an indefinite dharna on Tuesday night demanding its legislature party leader Arjun Munda's appointment as chief minister, wound up the agitation soon after the governor announced his decision to invite UPA leader Shibu Soren.

BJP state unit president Raghuwar Das told newspersons that the party would continue its agitation till the governor was called back.

The NDA legislators are now in New Delhi.
