August 01, 2003 15:51 IST

General Motors India said on Friday that its car sales surged by 192.7 per cent in July 2003 to 1,935 units from 661 units a year earlier.

Cumulative (January-July 2003) sales jumped by 31.7 per cent to 7,285 units from 5,530 units a year ago, a company spokesperson told PTI.

The July sales were higher by 78.8 per cent as compared to 1,082 cars sold in June this year, the spokesperson said.

The premium mid-size car 'Chevrolet Optra', which was launched in early July, contributed 1,005 units of the total cars sold during the review month.

The German-engineered 'Opel Corsa' range of models accounted for 905 units with the remaining 25 units coming from the luxury sedan 'Opel Vectra' and sports-utility-vehicle 'Chevrolet Forester', the spokesperson said.

GMI has started the second shift of production at its plant at Halol (Gujarat) due to popular response to recently-launched hatchback car 'Corsa Sail' and the 1.8 litre 'Chevrolet Optra' model.

A wholly-owned subsidiary of the world's biggest automaker, General Motors Corp, the company has targeted to double its car sales to about 18,000 units this year.
