Ananda Gajapati Raju, who moved to the TDP from the Congress and also shifted to this constituency from Bobbili which he had won in 1991, could not emulate his former wife Uma Gajapati Raju's 1989 success. Had M Venkata Rao, the NTR TDP candidate, not been in the fray, the aristocrat from the House of Vizianagram may have coasted through. Rao took 59, 341 votes, while the BJP candidate Alwardas Sunkari won 23, 897 votes.
