A whopping 480 candidates fought the 1996 election from here, but the CPI's B D Bixam trounced the BJP candidate by over 70,000 votes, with the Congress trailing third. Bixam thus retained the seat he had won in 1991, but the BJP, which had come third then, managed to consolidate subsequently.
