Till 1971 this second most populous constituency in India stayed with the Congress; in 1977 its sitting MP Brahm P Choudhury, who was in the fray on the Lok Dal ticket, romped home in style, making it the first time the Congress lost this seat. Sajjan Kumar won this seat back for the Congress in 1980, and in 1984 Bharat Singh did likewise. In 1989 the JD's Tarif Singh, who had lost the previous election, was elected from here, before Sajjan Kumar won back the seat for the Congress in 1991. In 1996, the BJP's Krishna Lal Sharma became the first BJP MP from here, and he defeated Sajjan Kumar by 233,000 votes, winning a whopping 701,262 votes.
