Piloo Mody was elected from here in 1967 and 1971 on the Swatantra Party ticket. In 1977, the year of the Janata wave, he shifted to the Bharatiya Lok Dal and was trounced. He tried his luck once again in 1980 on a Janata Party ticket, and the result was the same. More recently, in 1996, Shankersinh Vaghela then of the BJP was defeated by the Congress's sitting MP by just 3,000 votes, an electoral verdict which set off ructions for the BJP in Gujarat.
