In 1980, withstanding the Indira wave was the Janata Party candidate, Choudhary Devi Lal. The strongman of Haryana, even he couldn't withstand the Rajiv storm of 1984 and was swept aside by the Congress's Dharam Pal Singh and focused on state elections till fate intervened and made him king-maker in the 1989 election. Interestingly, in 1996, this constituency returned an Independent, Arvind Kumar, as the MP.
