Former Union home minister Buta Singh's constituency, which he represented in Parliament in 1967, 1971 and in 1980. The Akali Dal won the seat in 1985 and 1989, before the seat reverted to the Congress in 1992. In 1996, the Akali Dal's Basant Singh defeated Congress candidate Shamsher Singh by 70,000 votes.
