After electing a Congressman in 1952, the next time this constituency turned to the Congress was as late as 1980, and passed through Swatantra Party's hands in most of the interim. After voting Congress in 1980 and 1984, it turned to the JD in 1989, before settling for the BJP's Ram Narain Berwa in 1991. In 1996, however, Berwa crossed over to the Congress's symbol, and it was still the BJP that won, its S L Banshiwal squeaking past the sitting MP by less than 3,000 votes.
