Another seat where the TMC candidate defeated the official Congress candidate in 1996, P Theertharaman trouncing his erstwhile colleague by 132, 000 votes. V K Ramamurthy, of the Congress-T, was also in the fray, and he came a respectable third, winning just 2,000-odd votes less than the INC candidate. Ramamurthy had in fact won from here in 1977, winning 60 % of the votes.
