Kinder Lal won the seat for the Congress three consecutive times starting 1962; his fourth attempt in 1977 was stopped by the BLD. He fought the 1980 and 1984 elections on the Janata Party ticket and lost to the Congress. In 1989 he was back in the Congress, and back in Parliament as well. In 1991, for the first time, the seat voted BJP, electing Jai Prakash who retained the seat in 1996 as well, defeating the BSP's Shyam Prakash by 24,000 votes. Manni Lal of the Congress, who had defeated Kinder Lal in 1980, came fourth, winning just 2.90 % of the vote.
