Rafi Ahmed Kidwai was the first MP from here, in 1952. Much later came Arif Mohammed Khan, who won the 1984 election as a Congressman. Then came Shahbano, corruption etc and he contested the 1989 as the JD candidate and won. He was defeated in 1991 by the BJP's Rudrasen Choudhary, and in 1996 his luck did not change, still coming second to the BJP by 66,000 votes. The Congress was in eighth position, winning 1.48 % of the vote.
