Till 1991 it has been a toss-up only between the Congress and the Janata. The 1996 election, however, upset all previous calculations, with the BJP's Ashok Kumar Pradhan trouncing the BSP's Bir Sen by a huge margin of 161,000 votes. The JD's Lalit Kumar was in third place, winning 43,436 votes, and Roshan Lal, who was the JD MP in 1991 and who was in the fray this time on the Congress ticket, won 18,749 votes. The Congress-T's Trilok Chand, who was the Janata MP from here in 1980, was in fifth place, winning 16,277 votes.
