Jaya rips apart TN governor's address to house

All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazagham general secretary J Jayalalitha today described the Tamil Nadu governor's address to the state assembly yesterday as a "compendium of ineffectual statements, with no mention of practical schemes to bring relief to the poor and indigent sections of society".

In a statement in Madras, she said when Tamil Nadu was the "only state" deeply troubled by extremist activities and riven by caste clashes, the governor's claim that the state government had been making efforts to ensure communal and social harmony clearly indicated that it was "only a routine ritual".

"It would be no doubt pleasing to the eye to read about the determined and sustained efforts made by the government to maintain law and order, but the fact remained that there was absolute breakdown of law and order in the state," she said.

Jayalalitha alleged that the government had no clear-cut plans to re-open sick mills and industrial units nor were there any schemes to bring relief to the farmers. The electoral promise to procure sugarcane at Rs 1000 per tonne seemed to be a distant dream, she charged.

She said Chief Minister M Karunanidhi's announcements were all in the nature of advertisement hand-outs and he had no plans to implement them.

"The ardour which Karunanidhi showed for seeking vengeance should be reserved for schemes for uplifting the people. My charge against the government in this respect is gaining force day by day," she claimed.
