Court rejects Salman plea in poaching case

Kamla Bora in Jaipur

A local court in Jodhpur has rejected an application by actor Salman Khan for a copy of the video of forest department officials questioning him in the wildlife poaching case.

Judicial Magistrate Ajay Singh turned down the request after hearing arguments from both sides on Wednesday.

Salman is the main accused in five different cases of hunting protected wild animals - black bucks and chinkaras - under several sections of the Indian Penal Code, the Wildlife Protection Act and the Arms Act.

He along with actors Saif Ali Khan and Satish Shah and actresses Sonali Bendre, Tabu and Neelam are facing criminal charges for poaching protected wild animals near Jodhpur in September-October 1998 during the shooting of Rajshree Productions' Hum Saath Saath Hain .

The video was made in 1998 when Khan was in the custody of the state's forest department for about a week.

Salman's counsel had moved an application on November 6 seeking a copy of the video recording for preparing a defence. However, the plea was opposed on the ground that the original copy of the recording had been submitted to the court and the chargesheet filed in the case, containing all details of the questioning, had already been provided to the accused.

The court also summoned witnesses in the case for the next hearing in January.
