A division bench of the Madras high court on Tuesday dismissed a batch of petitions, including one filed by All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary J Jayalalitha, seeking to restrain the Election Commission from using electronic voting machines in the Tamil Nadu assembly election.
The bench comprising Chief Justice N K Jain and Justice K Sampath dismissed the petitions holding that there was no merit in the case.
The judges rejected all the contentions raised by the petitioners and said the Election Commission would consider the objections regarding the technical points in the use of EVMs.
The commission was directed to give wide publicity to the use of EVMs and to ensure that voters exercised their franchise in a free and fair manner.
