Jaya's appeals not taken up for hearing

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa's appeals against her conviction in two land deal cases, listed for Monday, were not taken up as the prosecution did not turn up due to advocates boycotting the courts.

The advocates are protesting against the proposed amendment to the Consumer Protection Act, which prohibits them from appearing in consumer courts.

When the cases came up before Justice R Balasubramaniam, Jayalalithaa's counsel requested that the appeals be posted for hearing on Tuesday in view of absence of prosecution counsel K V Venkatapathy.

The judge said the registry would decide when the appeals were to be posted.

Jayalalithaa needs to be acquitted in the Tansi case before she can contest (and win) a by-election to continue in office beyond the November 13 deadline.
