Police zero in on white Ambassador car

Preliminary information with the investigating authorities indicates that the terrorists used an Ambassador car registered in Delhi (DL-03 CJ-1527) to enter the Parliament House complex.

Delhi Police Commissioner Ajai Raj Sharma told reporters outside Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital that investigators believe the vehicle had a fake entry pass for Parliament.

But an intelligence officer told rediff.com that another vehicle being investigated belongs to a senior Lok Sabha member from Maharashtra.

The politician's office confirmed that the Contessa car in question does indeed belong to him.

A member of the politician's personal staff said the vehicle had been struck by bullets in the shootout and is still parked in the Parliament House compound. The politician too was in Parliament at the time.

But the vehicle that the investigators are zeroing in on is the Delhi-registered Ambassador whose number was given out by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pramod Mahajan.

The suspect car was parked outside a gate used by a few select people, including Rajya Sabha Chairman Krishan Kant and Deputy Chairman Najma Heptullah.

Commissioner Sharma also confirmed that the terrorists were in police uniforms. A senior police officer said he believes that besides grenades and guns, the terrorists used RDX as well. Again, this is yet to be confirmed.
