Pak warns against any 'misadventure', LeT denies hand in attack on Parliament

K J M Varma in Islamabad

Pakistan on Friday reacted strongly to India placing the blame on Thursday's attack on Parliament at the doorstep of Pak-based militant outfit Lashkar-Tayiba.

"India seems to be making efforts to create tension by blaming Pakistan," military spokesman Major General Rashid Qureshi said.

Islamabad, while expressing readiness to examine the evidence of the involvement of Pakistan-based Islamic militant groups in the attack, said the attack was "a stage-managed drama by the Indian government to tarnish the image of the "Kashmir struggle".

Qureshi said Pakistan was expecting "such a drama by the Indian government after its total isolation from the international community" following the September 11 attacks on American cities.

Islamabad also said New Delhi would pay a heavy price for any "misadventure".

The Lashkar-e-Tayiba also denied its involvement in the terrorist attack on Parliament in New Delhi and said it was a 'conspiracy' by the Indian government to 'malign' jihadi (holy war) groups.

A statement issued by LeT spokesman Yahya Mujahid said neither Lashkar nor any other 'jihadi organisation is involved in these incidents'.

In an almost identical reaction, the Muttahida Jihad Council (MJC), an umbrella organisation of militant outfits, said none of its constituents was involved in the attack.

The LeT and another militant outfit Jaish-E-Mohammad, which were not part of MJC, were recently listed by the United States as terrorist organisations.
