Intense probe by Delhi police in Parliament attack case

Though External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh has blamed the Lashkar-e-Tayiba for the attack on Parliament House on Thursday, the Delhi police, which is investigating the case, is tight-lipped about the claim.

Top police officers evaded calls by newsmen and huddled in a series of meetings presided over by the Commissioner of Police, Ajay Raj Sharma, to take stock of the investigations.

One team of the special branch of the Delhi police, which is investigating the case under the supervision of Deputy Commissioner Ashok Chand, has left for the Kashmir valley to interrogate those who were arrested in connection with the terrorist attack on the Jammu and Kashmir assembly in Srinagar on October 1.

Some other teams have been sent to neighbouring states to track down some of those who are suspected to have been either involved in the planning of the Parliament attack, or knew something about it.

The Delhi police is also seeking assistance of the J&K police in tracking down the address of Rashid Hussain Khan in Sopore, Baramulla. Hussain had allegedly bought the white ambassador car used in the attack from Lovely Motors for Rs 110,000 on December 11.

In the purchase papers, Hussain was shown as an instructor by profession. The Delhi police team questioned the owner of the shop at length about the transaction.

The police also picked up two Pakistani nationals from the Indira Gandhi International Airport on Thursday night, minutes before they were to board flight a flight for Atlanta and Toronto.

They have been identified as Mohammad Shafiq and Feroz Durrani. It is not yet clear who was going to Toronto and who was going to Atlanta. Both of them had made several calls to Pakistan during their stay in Delhi.

Meanwhile, the Director General of J&K police, A K Suri, told newsmen in Jammu that the attack on Parliament could be either the work of Jaish-e-Mohammed or the Lashkar-e-Tayiba.

Delhi police officials are hopeful that by Saturday evening they would have a fairly good idea of those behind the attack.
