False alarm at Sanchar Bhawan in Delhi

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

The Delhi police and security agencies swung into action around 2000 hours on Wednesday evening after Deputy Commissioner of Police H M Meena received a phone call that some suspicious men were heading towards Sanchar Bhavan, which houses the telecommunications ministry, on Ashoka Road.

Within minutes, the Central Industrial Security Force, which is in-charge of the building's security, sealed all the entry points and undertook a massive room-to-room search.

Top Delhi police officials reached the spot to supervise the operation.

The bomb disposal squad and the dog squad were also pressed into service while fire tenders were put on alert.

However, after an intensive search lasting over a half and a half, the police declared the call to be a hoax. However, security was stepped up in the building.

This was the second call that the police was chasing.

Earlier, around 1400 hours (IST), they had received a call about three policemen and one man in civilian clothes moving suspiciously towards Nizamuddin in south Delhi.
