Parliament attack: Afzal sent to police remand for 10 days

Asserting that they had secured a few leads from Mohammed Afzal, pointman of Jaish-e-Mohammed, who was arrested in connection with the December 13 Parliament attack, the police on Saturday secured a further remand of 10 days to facilitate his interrogation.

Afzal, who was produced before magistrate D K Sharma, was remanded to police custody till January 8 under Prevention of Terrorism Ordinance, after the police told the court that his custodial interrogation was necessary to gain more information about terrorist activities in Kashmir.

Investigating officer Rajvir Singh informed the court that Afzal had been taken to Kashmir once during his custody and police had succeeded in getting a few leads in the case.

"We are getting information from him," he told the court.

Under POTO, the police remand of an accused can be obtained for 30 days, the investigating officer told the court.

Accepting the plea of prosecution, the court asked the police to get the medical check up of the accused done regularly during the custody.

Afzal replied in the negative when asked by the court whether he was subjected to any torture during his custody.

Afzal, an associate of the five terrorists who had attacked Parliament House on December 13, had recorded his confessions under POTO before a Deputy Commissioner of Police, which was subsequently sealed by additional chief metropolitan magistrate on December 22.
