DMK shuts door on TMC: PTI

"It is for the TMC to respond to my earlier invitation. I will be glad if they join the front. The DMK will consider accommodating the TMC in the front, if it responds to the invitation," DMK President M Karunanidhi told reporters after a day-long general council meeting of the party.

However, he indicated that the DMK would not wait any more for the TMC's decision, saying, "Our election work will start from this minute. I will be glad if the TMC comes with us to defeat the AIADMK front. Even without the TMC, we will win."

He firmly ruled out snapping ties with the Bharatiya Janata Party for the sake of striking an alliance with the TMC and said the DMK's relationship with the BJP was "firm and cordial".

Karunanidhi also ruled out aligning with the Congress.

The DMK, which in alliance with the TMC, defeated the AIADMK in the 1996 assembly polls, would defeat the AIADMK without the help of the TMC now, he said, adding that "our alliance with the BJP, MDMK, Puthiya Tamizhgam and Human Rights Party of India is enough to defeat the AIADMK."

He said the main issue in the elections would be "an honest and a non-corrupt government versus a dishonest and corrupt government."
