The Samajwadi Party has given a call for a state-wide bandh in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday in protest against the killing of party MP Phoolan Devi.
Irate party workers staged a dharna near Raj Bhavan in Lucknow on Wednesday demanding a high-level probe into the murder.
State SP president Ram Sharan Das told reporters that Phoolan Devi had applied for a firearm licence, but the Bhadohi district administration rejected her application.
Das said there was a larger political design behind the killing which had caused widespread resentment in several districts, including Mirzapur, Chandauli, Varanasi, Basti, Azamgarh and Allahabad.
