Syed Firdaus Ashraf in Bombay
Bharat Shah, the diamond merchant and film financier who was arrested on charges of having links with gangster Chhota Shakeel, collapsed in Bombay's J J Hospital and is reported to be in a serious condition.
Shah's brother Bipin told rediff.com, "The police did not give him food to eat and they are not even allowing family members to meet him. We are extremely worried about his health."
Bharat Shah had been moved from Thane central jail to the hospital for a routine check-up as he has not been keeping good health.
The next hearing of his sixth bail application -- Bipin Shah insisted it was the fourth -- is to take place on July 18 in the Bombay high court.
"The doctors have told us that he will have to be admitted to the ICU [intensive care unit] for the next 48 hours. He was also given artificial respiration," said Bipin Shah.
About the charges against his brother, he said Bharat Shah was innocent. "They [the police] are not providing us with any tapes. We have told them to hand over the tapes to the home ministry or let the CBI conduct an inquiry. But they are not coming out with the truth."
Bharat Shah was arrested on January 8 under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act.
