Dawaram's appointment challenged in HC

Even as former director general of Tamil Nadu police Walter Dawaram began his operations on Friday to catch Veerappan, three petitions were filed in the Madras high court challenging his appointment as the chief of the Special Task Force constituted to nab the forest brigand.

The Peoples' Union for Civil Liberty and the Peoples' Watch and Society for Community Organisation Trust submitted before the court that the appointment of Dawaram was contrary to the provisions of the Police Act 1861 and Tamil Nadu Police Act 1859.

The petitions added that the appointment overlooks the serious human rights violations allegedly committed by the officer.

The petitioners wanted the court to issue a direction to restrain Dawaram from acting as the STF chief.
