Sonia seeks time on DD

Tara Shankar Sahay in New Delhi

Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday asked Prime Minister A B Vajpayee to allow the authorised representative of her party time on Doordarshan to explain its view to the nation on the defence deals scandal.

In a letter to the PM, Sonia pointed out that his government had taken the unprecedented step of first allowing a minister who had been dropped from the Union Cabinet, to address the nation on the national television network, and then enabled PMO officials Brajesh Mishra and N K Singh to address a televised press conference under the official Press Information Bureau's auspices.

She said she looked forward to the prime minister's reply.
