A sentry at the Northern Command Headquarters in Udhampur in Jammu region shot dead three of his colleagues before killing himself.
In the shoot out early on Monday, three other soldiers received serious gun shot wounds and were admitted to the army hospital.
Police sources said a security guard identified as Sanjeev Kumar went berserk early on Monday after a heated argument with his colleagues.
He later fired indiscriminately from his automatic rifle killing three soldiers on the spot and injuring three others who were also on guard duty, the sources said.
Sanjeev later shot himself, they added.
Senior army officers immediately rushed to the spot. The condition of the injured is stated to be critical.
In August, a CRPF guard had shot dead two of his colleagues in an army camp at Rawalpora in Srinagar.
