In a related incident, four activists of the Jammu and Kashmir Students United Front (JKSUF), including its president Khalid Jehangir, were taken into preventive custody when they tried to take out a protest march from Dal Gate to the local office of the United Nations Military Observers Group at Sonawar in Srinagar, official sources said.
The deceased youth Zafar Iqbal was a JKSUF activist.
The Traders and Manufacturers Federation is a constituent of the separatist Hurriyat Conference.
Shops and other business establishments remained closed and most of the vehicles stayed off roads, the sources said.
Security forces had been deployed in strength and patrolling intensified in sensitive areas of the city, they said.
The body of Iqbal was brought to his Dal Gate residence on January four from Delhi.
While his family members alleged that he was tortured to death by the Delhi police following his arrest, the latter maintained that he was found with serious injuries and was taken to hospital where he succumbed to his wounds.
