The AIADMK government in Tamil Nadu did not want to adopt a 'confrontationist attitude' towards the Centre as it would adversely affect the state's interest, party supremo Jayalalithaa Jayaram said on Thursday.
Speaking to mediapersons after garlanding a statue of party founder M G Ramachandran at the party headquarters in Chennai, Jayalalithaa said AIADMK was not part of any front at the national level and denied reports that her party was getting closer to the BJP.
The AIADMK would extend issue-based support to the ruling National Democratic Alliance, she told a press conference in Chennai.
"However, we will oppose the Centre on issues, which adversely affect the state's interests," she said.
The LTTE's request for providing shelter to its ideologue Anton Balasingham on Indian soil to negotiate with the Sri Lankan government was one such issue, she said adding AIADMK opposed 'tooth and nail' to the entry of the banned outfit.
The Centre had already stated that it had not received any formal letter from the LTTE, she pointed out.
Jayalalithaa said her party backed the Centre on the various steps taken after the attack on Parliament.
She said the re-induction of Defence Minister George Fernandes in the Union Cabinet could have waited till the Venkataswamy Commission (probing the Tehelka episode and allegations of corruption in arms deals) came out with its report.
Denying claims of VHP general secretary Acharya Giriraj Kishore that the AIADMK backed the proposal for building a Ram temple at the disputed site in Ayodhya, she said, "Nothing should be done in violation of court orders."
"Court orders on the issue should be respected," she insisted.
