Former prime minister Chandra Shekhar has said the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance government at the Centre would be committing a big mistake if it bowed before the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh pressure to trifurcate Jammu and Kashmir.
The present situation in the border state is very grim and its trifurcation is no solution to the problems there, the former prime minister said.
"In fact, trifurcation can give a boost to separatist forces whose repercussions would be felt all over the country," Chandra Shekhar said.
Ruling out any possibility of war between India and Pakistan, he charged the governments of both countries with trying to create 'unnecessary tension' over Jammu and Kashmir.
To a question, the former prime minister said he backed the opposition demand for imposition of President's rule in Gujarat and added this is something that should have been done long ago.
