Stalin to lose Chennai mayor's post

In a ruling that seals the fate of Chennai Mayor M K Stalin, the Madras high court on Wednesday night declined to stay a recent government notification, which effectively prohibits MPs and MLAs from simultaneously holding posts in civic bodies.

This means that Stalin, who is a DMK MLA and son of party president M Karunanidhi, will have to give up either his assembly seat or the mayorship of the Chennai civic corporation.

Disposing of a public interest litigation challenging the controversial notification, a division bench comprising Chief Justice Subashan Reddy and Justice D Murugesan, however, restrained the government from notifying elections to the mayor's post pending disposal of the petition and posted it for August five.

Stalin was served with a notice pursuant to a gazette notification issued on June six calling upon him to opt to continue either as a legislator or mayor, but not both.

The notification also said that should he not opt of being a legislator then he will lose the mayoral post on June 18.
