Pagetti Franco, who had arrived in Srinagar on March 21, was covering the clash when he was hit on the head by a teargas shell, sources said.
He was taken to the SMHS Hospital, where he received stitches and was referred to the Soura Medical Institute for further check-up, they said. The other four had minor injuries.
The trouble began when the JKLF activists took to the streets outside party headquarters at Maisuma and raised slogans and pelted stones on policemen.
The police acted swiftly and resorted to lathi-charge and fired teargas shells.
Life in Maisuma and its adjoining areas, including Lal Chowk, Budshah Chowk, Koker Bazaar and Gowkadal, remained disrupted as shopkeepers downed their shutters in anticipation of trouble.
The JKLF has already called for a general strike on Wednesday to protest against Malik's arrest.
