Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

At least five people, including two armymen, were killed and 14 injured in heavy Pakistani shelling in Poonch on Wednesday evening.

The injured have been rushed to hospital.

Pakistani shells also landed on Poonch town, which has triggered heavy panic among the residents.

One shell hit an army camp, while another fell on the District Institute of Education resulting in damage.

Some houses in the town were also hit by splinters.

The Indian artillery retaliated and shelled Pakistani positions inflicting casualties and damage, defence sources said.

A report from Kargil said Pakistani troops fired mortars on Kaksar village on Tuesday night resulting in extensive damage to four houses.

The local residents from Kaksar area have shifted to safer places near Kargil. A report received on Wednesday evening from Kargil said Pakistani artillery shelled Batalik sector. However, there was no report of any casualties.
