Musharraf promised to stop cross-border terrorism within a certain period: Fernandes

Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf has promised to stop cross-border terrorism 'within a certain period', Defence Minister George Fernandes said on Thursday.

Fernandes said British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw, who flew to Delhi from Islamabad, on Wednesday conveyed to Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee 'the stated intention of Musharraf that within a certain period of time cross-border terrorism will come to an end'.

It was not clear whether Straw mentioned any time frame.

"But the point is how does one believe it. Cross-border terrorism is in the hands of the Pakistani army, backed by the ISI and other such elements," Fernandes said.
