Rains ease out in Chennai

The heavy rains that lashed Chennai in the last two days have eased out, giving the city a breather, even as the toll in rain related incidents rose to 19.

In the past 48 hours, the Meenambakkam area recorded 26cm of rains, while the Nungambakkam area recorded 20cm.

With a low-pressure trough persisting along the coast from the Gulf of Mannar to the southwest Bay of Bengal, the Meteorological Centre has predicted more rain or thundershowers in the next 48 hours.

The rains, which brought down the temperature and filled reservoirs, also flooded low-lying areas.

Cable-laying operations by IT companies have also worsened the situation.

But this has not dampened the Diwali spirit among the shoppers.

The withdrawal of the indefinite strike by the Tamil Nadu government employees and teachers on Friday evening also added to festive spirit
