Ramadoss kick-starts border row with Kerala

N Sathiya Moorthy in Chennai

Pattali Makkal Katchi founder S Ramadoss on Monday called for a clear demarcation of the boundary between Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

"The mountainous terrain dividing the two states had come in the way of a clear demarcation at the time of the linguistic reorganisation of states in 1956," he said in Chennai.

Ramadoss said Kerala had encroached upon areas in Udhagamandalam and Gudalore regions along the Western Ghats.

"Smugglers from Kerala are also plundering the forest wealth from the state," he said, adding, "even river-sand from Tamil Nadu is being illegally mined by these smugglers."

Ramadoss referred to the Mullaiperiyar dam row between the two states and said Kerala had not restored the storage height to 152 feet even after the Supreme Court's intervention.

In order to help irrigate lands in southern Tamil Nadu, Kerala did not allow the diversion of rivers wasting into the Arabian Sea, he alleged.

Ramadoss also revived his demand for the bifurcation of Tamil Nadu. He termed the criticism of his demand as 'unsound' and 'biased'. Some people had tried to give a caste colour to the issue by calling it a 'Vanniar demand', he added.
