Court orders police to register FIR against Karunanidhi

N Sathiya Moorthy in Chennai

A local court in Chennai has directed the city police to register a First Information Report against Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president and former Tamil Nadu chief minister Muthuvel Karunanidhi on the charge of making 'derogatory remarks' about the majority community.

Judicial magistrate of the Egmore criminal court, Paramaraj, passed the order after the petitioner promised to obtain the relevant sanction from the Centre and the state government within three weeks.

The DMK chief reportedly made the derogatory remarks while addressing a minorities-sponsored rally against the Tamil Nadu government's law banning forcible religious conversions.
