Ranvir Sena chief Brahmeshwar Singh and over two dozen other inmates of Central Beur jail in Patna ended their hunger strike on Monday after assurance from officials to look into the death of an undertrial prisoner, Kalut Yadav alias Anirudh.
Singh had unexpectedly joined the hunger strike began last Friday by the inmates, mostly supporters of the Sena's bitter rivals, the Communist Party of India-Marxist/Leninist, the Maoist Communist Centre and the People's War.
In recent months at least three undertrial prisoners had died in the jail allegedly due to the negligence of the jail authorities to provide medical treatment on time.
"It [hunger strike] was nothing to do with political and ideological base," Singh said.
Singh has been in detention since his arrest in Patna in August this year on charges of masterminding 300 killings.
