Stalin, DMK workers court arrest in Tamil Nadu

N Sathiya Moorthy in Chennai

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam youth wing leader M K Stalin led party cadres in courting arrest across Tamil Nadu on Monday in protest against the 'anti-people, anti-democratic' policies of the state government led by All-India Anna DMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa.

Stalin, son of DMK president M Karunanidhi, courted arrest in Chennai at the head of 7,000-strong contingent. The statewide figure is put upwards of 25,000, though final figures are yet to be compiled.

The DMK's dharna outside state government offices is aimed at protesting against recent price and tariff hikes, and to express sympathy with government employees' and teachers' organisations that are launching an indefinite strike from Wednesday.

Speaking on the occasion, Stalin said the party would intensify its stir "if the rulers do not correct the wrongs".

The police resorted to preventive arrests throughout the state on Sunday. The total number of preventive arrests itself was put at 6,000, and included second-line leaders, legislators, and former ministers of the DMK.
