Tamil film industry to
unite against politicians

Sathiya MoorthyChennai

With a view to counter political forces targeting individual actors and films, producers, distributors and exhibitors of the Tamil film industry on Tuesday resolved to put up a united front against such trends.

Talking to newspersons after a meeting in Chennai, Film Producers' Association president Ibrahim Rowther denied the decision had anything to do with the Pattali Makkal Katchi cadre protesting against Rajnikanth's Baba, which faced problems in some parts of the state.

"This could happen to any film or any actor," he cautioned.

Denials apart, the initiative by the producer-distributor-exhibitor axis is believed to have been prompted by the attacks on cinema halls screening Baba in PMK strongholds and, secondly, the promptness with which Rajnikanth returned up to Rs 150 million (Rs 15 crore) to distributors and exhibitors after the film failed to make the grade.

Recently, the Cauvery waters dispute also seemed to have created divisions in the Tamil film industry with parallel programmes being announced to mark its protest against Karnataka.
