The Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday threatened to impose the Essential Services Maintenance Act on state government employees who are planning an indefinite strike starting Wednesday.
The government also said it would stop payment of wages to striking employees.
The employees are demanding the payment of bonus and other benefits for Diwali
An official release called the proposed strike against 'public interest'.
The release 'reminded' the employees that striking work in 'essential services' under ESMA would entail imprisonment up to three years, and a fine up to Rs 10,000.
It said the strike was 'unnecessary, and against the people', and listed the various steps taken by the government to take the state out of the current financial crunch. It appealed to them to cooperate with the government to implement welfare schemes for the common man, without striking work.
