Six people killed in Tamil Nadu rains

N Sathiya Moorthy in Chennai

At least four labourers lost their lives when a house in Karunthampalayam village, near Coimbatore, collapsed on Monday morning following heavy rains.

In another incident in Tamil Nadu on Saturday, a mother and son were electrocuted after touching live wire, the mains of which were broken due to heavy rains.

Heavy to moderate rains have been reported across the state since the northeast monsoon set in on Friday.

The Thanjavur delta, in particular, has been receiving substantial rains over the past fortnight, giving a new twist to the ongoing 'Cauvery dispute' with Karnataka. The farmers of the delta depend heavily on the Cauvery waters released by Karnataka.

Rains have also been reported in Chennai and the suburbs.

The level in the city's four major lakes, used to supply drinking water, has increased over the past fortnight.
