Jayalalithaa now targets S M Krishna

A day after she attacked Congress president Sonia Gandhi again, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Tuesday targeted her Karnataka counterpart S M Krishna, calling him "callous and irresponsible".

In a strongly worded statement in Chennai, she said, "Krishna will do well to remember that when there is a crying need for cooperation between the two states in nabbing brigand Veerappan, such a turn could only be termed as unfortunate."

She was referring to Krishna's criticism of her anti-Sonia outbursts.

The chief minister said she was extremely careful and guarded in her statement about Krishna and the role of the Special Task Force in catching Veerappan, but Krishna had chosen to make references to her "state of mind".

"Irrespective of Krishna's immature outburst, the Tamil Nadu police would not spare any effort in nabbing Veerappan, and would go ahead with all seriousness," she said.

Jayalalithaa claimed she could understand Krishna's "predicament and the horns of the dilemma on which he is situated. As a loyal vassal [of the Congress], he has no other choice but to rush unthinkingly and rattle his sabre when the political legitimacy of his satrap [Sonia Gandhi] is called to question".

"If he did not do so, it would draw the ire of his party's high command, and perhaps he would have to forfeit his chief ministership in the bargain," she added.
