5 girls charred to death, 29 injured in Tuticorin

Five teenaged girls were charred to death and 29 others seriously injured in a major fire that broke out in a semi-mechanised private match factory at Murukkumeendanpatti, 20km from Kovilpatti taluk in Tuticorin district of Tamil Nadu, on Tuesday afternoon, police said.

The fire broke out due to friction when a gunny bag containing inflammable chemicals was being dragged out for drying. The blaze spread quickly in the unit, which employed about 80 women and two men.

Those injured included the man who was dragging the bag, police said. Two women died on the spot, while three others died in hospital.

Fire service personnel rushed to the spot and put out the fire after a three-hour battle.

District Collector Thyagarajan, Communist Party of India legislator Rajendran and top police officials visited the factory and the hospital.
